Director R. Ravikumar, known for his high-concept films, brings a local twist to the sci-fi genre in Ayalaan. The film incorporates Tamil cinema essentials, including a hero introduction song, romance, comedic sidekicks, and a corporate villain. Sharad Kelkar plays the antagonist, adding a northern flavor to the mix.
The movie doesn’t shy away from addressing important themes like organic farming and environmental conservation. Despite being under production during the period of big-hero films (2015-20), the film’s core theme of saving the planet remains relevant.
Ravikumar’s clever twists on familiar Hollywood concepts—superpowers, UFOs, extra-terrestrials, powerful robots, and femme fatales—make Ayalaan an entertainer for all ages. In the first half, the alien character Tattoo is portrayed like a cute cartoon figure, appealing to both kids and the child within adults. The seamless visual effects enhance the magic, complementing the imaginative storytelling.
However, the film isn’t without its flaws. Scene transitions could be smoother, the villain lacks a menacing presence, and certain moments in the second half could use more impact. Yet, just when things seem underwhelming, exciting moments pull us back into the narrative.
